PSY 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11-12: Epigenetics, Molecular Genetics, Twin
Document Summary
Behavior geneticists- study the effects of environment compared to heredity. Genes: chromosome- composed of dna- the genetic material, genes- small segments of the dna molecules that are responsible for synthesizing proteins, genome- a common sequence of dna. Identical twins- developed from one single egg that splits into two: have same genes, but not always the same number of gene copies, may share different placentas, causing different nourishment. Even identical twins that are separated at birth are very similar without having contact with their twin. Fraternal twins- develop from two different eggs: not genetically identical. Biological versus adoptive relatives: adoption creates genetics relatives and environmental relatives. People often have different personalities even if they grow up living together. Environment is more likely to affect attitude, value, politics, faith and manner. Temperament- emotional reactions and excitability: genetically influenced, heritability- the proportion of variation that is attributed to differing genes, never can determine an exact percentage.
