CHEM 111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Weighted Arithmetic Mean, Carbon-12, Atomic Number
Document Summary
Dalton"s atomic model- the first modern atomic theory to state that elements are composed of minute individual particles called atoms. Greek model of matter: four elements earth, air, water, and fire, democritus- atoms (indivisible particles) make up matter, aristotle opposed atomic ideas. F= k q1 q2 r2: michael faraday discovered electrically charged ions, svante arrhenius explained that conductivity results from the dissociation of compounds into ions. Subatomic particles- particles found within the atom, mainly protons, neutrons, and electrons. Electron- a subatomic particle that exists outside the nucleus and carries a negative electrical charge. Proton- a subatomic particle found in the nucleus of the atom that carries a positive electrical charge and a mass of about 1 amu. Thomson model of the atom- thomson asserted that atoms are not indivisible but are composed of smaller parts; they contain both positively and negatively charged particles protons as well as electrons.
