IPHY 2420 Chapter Notes - Chapter 10: Gluconeogenesis, Erythropoiesis, Avidin
Document Summary
Nutrition chapter 10 nutrients involved in energy metabolism and bone health. Vitamin b is crucial in providing our bodies energy to properly metabolize food. Vitamin b is primarily a coenzyme in the body. Coenzymes help enzymes do their jobs (help with chemical reactions in the body). Coenzymes give us enough energy to sustain life. Chromium is an example of a coenzyme that helps cells take in more glucose. Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin b6, folate, vitamin b12, pantothenic acid, and biotin are all examples of vitamin b nutrients. Thiamin deficiencies lead to a disease called beriberi. Beriberi causes permanent nerve damage and ends in paralysis. Thiamin deficiencies were incredibly uncommon until steam powered mills began removing the outer shells of grains, where most people get their thiamin. Good food sources of thiamin include enriched cereals, and whole grain products. Thiamin is involved in providing our bodies with energy so the symptoms of beriberi include fatigue and muscle weakness.
