Personality: a set of unique characteristics than in uence our behaviors, emotions, thoughts, and interactions. Personality traits: our particular characteristics that lead us to act in fairly predictable ways. Many of us adapt to our surrounds and learn from our experiences. Those with a personality disorder do not have this exibility. Personality disorder: suffers display an enduring, rigid pattern of inner experience and outward behavior that impairs their sense of self, emotional experiences, goals, capacity for empathy, and/or capacity for intimacy; extreme, dysfunctional personality traits. Onset: adolescence or early adulthood (sometimes childhood) 10-15% of all adults in the u. s. Many do not even realize they have a disorder. Comorbidity: the occurrence of someone with a personality disorder having another psychological disorder. The presence of a personality disorder makes it more dif cult for one to have a successful recovery from other disorders.
