CHEM 101L Chapter 2.2: 013 Types of Reactions and Important Reactions to Know
Document Summary
Chem 101: types of reactions and important reactions to know. In chemistry, there are many classifications to reactions, in fact they can be multiple types at once, but first of all, all reactions can be classified as either endothermic (absorb energy) or exothermic (release energy). In order to figure out the difference in an equation, it is very easy to do. If the reaction requires energy to start it is called endothermic. If the reaction loses energy at the end it is called exothermic. A general occurrence when exothermic reactions occur is that the product, when transformed at the end of the reaction, becomes a substance of a lower state than the reactant was. An example of such would be the decomposition reaction (these will be discussed later) of peroxide: Notice how it went from a gas state to a liquid state, that is an indication that this reaction has lost energy and is an exothermic reaction.
