Document Summary

Major changes associated with training occur in the first 6-10 weeks: magnitude of adaptations depends on the volume and intensity of exercise performed during training, quantity of training does not equal quality of training. Rate at which an athlete adapts to training is genetically limited: too much training can reduce optimal potential for improvement or can even cause a breakdown in adaptation process, reducing performace. Each individual responds differently to the same training stress: what is excessive training to one person may actually be below the capacity of another for optimal adaptations. It is important to recognize individual differences when designing and carrying out training programs. Progressive overload: to continue to provide the benefits of training, the training stimulus must be progressively increased as the body adapts: when it is taken too far, the body is pushed beyond its ability to adapt.
