John locke argued for limited government and protection of individual rights. People give power to the government by consenting to there rule on the basis that they are being protected. State of nature was when men and women lived in individual communities by studying this we find: take care of oneself and need, work for your own survival, do not harm others or seek trouble through conflict/war. Doing this one could harm oneself and they are defying the first rule of nature: help others, only on the condition that you are helping them without putting yourself at risk. Individual is more important than the state. Individual is capable of independence and self-determination. Adam smith- liberalism and capitalism are mutually reinforcing. Government should only serve in providing security and public services. Natural equality does not equal economic equality. People would naturally split into 4 economical groups.
