SOC 001 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Family Values, Resource Mobilization, Relative Deprivation
Document Summary
Violation of shared norms concerning distribution of resources. Rising expectations but not as fast as their expectations or not as fast as the condition of others around them. Movements most likely occur when a period of rising expectations are followed by sharp worsening of conditions for members of a deprived group. Emphasis of human/material resources and rational planning. Foregrounds roles of movement leaders and organization, to must resources necessary to achieve success. Participants payoff to make them commit to the movement through selective incentives . Sometimes events outside the group"s control (a weakening of the state, death of a king, a strike) provide an opportunity to advance. Social movements are more likely to succeed when leaders/organizers can frame goals in a way consistent with constituents"" values or worldviews. Escalation may occur when one person"s protest becomes widely known, spawning diffusion or imitative behaviors.
