Culture: patterns of ideas, attitudes, values, lifestyle habits, and traditions shared. Usually determined by where we live, but also through religion, ethnicity, by a group of people and passed on to future generations etc. Culture is not just an influence on our nature, but it is also a part of our nature. Promote personal ideas, strengths, goals, pursued in competition with others, leading to individual achievement and finding unique identity. Promote group and societal goals and duties, and blending in with group id, with achievement attributed to mutual support. Self: id from individual traits/ identity from belonging. Life task: discover & express uniqueness/ maintain connection, perform role. Relationships: many, casual, confrontation/ few, close and enduring, harmony. Attributing behavior: behavior reflects personality/social norms and roles. People in individualist raise children to be self-reliant and independent. People in collectivist raise children to be compliant, obedient, & integrated into webs of mutual support.
