Theory of mind- ability to understand that others have their own thoughts and perspective. Need it to stop self from being selfish. Develops bc during preoperational stage, children developing and advancing in terms of their egocentrism. 3 mountain task: egocentric boy couldn"t take her perspective: she sees what i see. Non egocentric realized that they had different views. 2, 3, 4 quite egocentric and this develops. Once they aren"t as egocentric, can develop theory of mind. Examples of operations that preoperational children cannot do yet: Conservation: refers to the ability to understand that a quantity is conserved (doesn"t change) even when its arranged in a different shape. Milk poured in a thinner glass looks like more because its taller. Do not understand that an object conserves the quantity. They are centrating (only pay attention to one aspect of a problem i. e. height), but cannot decentrate. Begins at ages 6-7 (first grade) to age 11.
