GEN-3000 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Transfer Rna, Nonsense Mutation, Peptide
Document Summary
Mutation is the source of all genetic variation! Most mutations are bad - hence the cellular machinery to prevent them! Chapter 14 gene mutation, dna repair, and transposition. Mutation - inherited change in genetic information (either in daughter cells or in individuals) Constantly bombarded by things that can mutate our dna. Mutations are not always a bad thing, but most are. Change in hereditary material (change in dna) inherited mitotically or meiotically. One mutation can fall into several different categories so they are not mutually exclusive. Somatic v germ line deals with which cell populations are mutated. Somatic mutations - arise in somatic (non-sex) cells - passed to daughter cells by mitosis. Somatic mutations arise in somatic cells: skin cells, liver cells, heart cells. These are passed to the next generation of daughter cells. Does not get passed to the next generation. Germ-line mutations - arise in cells that make gametes - passed to future generations.
