Document Summary

Chemical energy: the potential energy stored in chemical bonds. The sum of all the kinetic and potential (including chemical) energies of an object, or a collection of many objects, is the internal energy (e) of the object or collection. When the collective internal energies of the reactants in a chemical reaction are different from those of the products -- and they nearly always are -- the differences constitutes the change in energy ( e) that accompanies the reaction. As a practical matter, the absolute value of a system"s internal energy is extremely difficult to determine but changes in energy are fairly easy to measure because they correspond to changes in the system"s physical state or temperature. The branch of chemistry that explores these changes in energy is called thermochemistry. As we explore a system"s energy production and consumption, we need to be clear on how the system interacts with its surroundings.
