Document Summary

Notes from: textbook: campbell biology: concepts and connections 8th edition. I strongly suggest watching the crashcourse episode(s) that go along with these topics, so that you may comprehend them better. Photosynthesis: takes place in chloroplasts, energy from sunlight used to rearranged co2 and h2o molecules to make sugar and oxygen. Cellular respiration: takes place in mitochondria of eukaryotic cells, oxygen consumed as sugar is broken down to co2 and h2o, cell captures energy released in atp. Sone energy is lost at heat (1st law of thermodynamics) Respiration is aerobic harvest of energy from food molecules by cells: aerobic: requires oxygen. C6h12o6 + 6o2 6co2 + 6h2o + atp + heat. Cellular resp. can make up to 32 atp molecules per 1 glucose molecule, and has about a 34% efficiency, rest is lost due to heat. The heat released helps maintain a warm body temp.
