Commonalities define our shared human nature: genes, evolution, and behavior. Evolutionary psych -- study of the evolution of cognition and behavior using principles of natural selection. Studies how natural selection predisposes not just physical traits suited to particular contexts. As mobile gene machines, we carry not only the physical legacy but also the psychological legacy of our ancestors" adaptive preference: culture and behavior. Culture -- enduring behaviors, ideas, attitudes, and traditions shared by a large group of people and transmitted from one generation to the next. It recognizes that nature and nurture interact in forming us. Genes are not fixed blueprints; their expression depends on the environment: cultural diversity. Migration and refugee evacuations are mixing cultures more than ever. Peace requires a genuine appreciation for both our genuine differences and our deep similarities: norms: expected behavior. Norms -- standards for accepted and expected behavior. They restrain and control us so successfully and so subtly that we hardly sense their existence.
