Prenatal development -- happens when the moment of conception and the beginning of the birth process. Period of the zygote -- first phase of prenatal development, last from conception till developing organism becomes firmly attached to uterine wall. Period of the embryo -- 2nd phase of prenatal development, last from 3rd week - 8th prenatal week, major organs and anatomical structures take shape. Period of the fetus -- 3rd phase of prenatal development, 9th week - birt; all major organ systems start to function and the fetus grows rapidly: the period of the zygote. Zygote (fertilized ovum) moves uterus divides by mitosis 2 cells. Blastocyst -- name given to the ball of cells formed when fertilized egg starts to divide. Inner layer of blastocyste will become embryo. Outer layer of cells will develop tissues that protect and nourish the embryo: implantation -- burrowing of blastocyst into uterine lining.
