Conception -- the moment of fertilization, when a sperm penetrates an ovum, forming a zygote: the genetic material. The very first development that happens after conception is protective: when a sperm cell penetrates the lining of the ovum. The sperm cell starts to disintegrate, releasing its genetic material new cell nucleus forms around the hereditary infor. Zygote -- a single cell formed at conception from the union of a sperm and an ovum. Chromosome -- a threadlike structure made up of genes; in humans there are. 46 chromosomes in the nucleus of each body cell. Gene -- hereditary blueprints for development that are transmitted unchanged from generation to generation. Each member of a pair corresponds to the other in size, shape, and hereditary fans it serves. Each parent has 23 chromosomes to each of their children. Genes on each chromosome also function as pairs, 2 members of each gene being located at the same sites on corresponding chromosomes.
