First step of understanding perception get rid of idea of images in the brain and begin thinking about symbolic descriptions of objects and events in the external world. Ex: writing a friend in china what your apartment looks like, you"d write a letter describing your apartment yet the squiggles of ink bear no physical resemblance to your bedroom. Letter symbolic description of your bedroom. Any object evokes a pattern of activity among a subset of these areas. Patterns of activity symbolize or represent visual objects the same way squiggles of ink on paper symbolize or represent your bedroom.
