NSCI 342 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Valence Electron, Octet Rule, Ionic Bonding
Document Summary
Any naturally occurring inorganic solid that possesses an orderly crystalline structure and a definite chemical composition that allows for variation pg. Naturally occurring: minerals formed by natural geologic processes. Generally inorganic: inorganic crystalline solids that are found naturally in the ground. Orderly crystalline structure: made up of atoms and they are arranged in an orderly, repetitive manner. Definite chemical composition that allows for some variation. Any solid mass of mineral, or mineral like matter that occurs naturally. Usually are made up of different kinds of minerals called an aggregate. Aggregate refers to the way the minerals are joined that their individual properties are still visible. Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Atoms are not visible to the naked eye. Protons and neutrons are dense particles and they have almost identical masses. Electrons have a very small mass, about 1/2000 of a proton"s mass. When electrons and protons are paired their charges cancel out.
