PSYC 103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Absolute Threshold, Psychophysics, Sensory System
Document Summary
All have a stimulus (sound waves, smell, visual object) All have a collection apparatus (eyes, nose, ears, etc. ) The stimulus comes in and reacts on the receptors (transduce [one kind of energy to another form of energy] energy ex - gasoline [liquid] into a gaseous state which powers the mechanical energy) All have neural systems that send the received information to the brain. Brain makes a perception (interpretation) of the sensation. Sensation - impact of a signal on the receptors of a sensory system. Soft vs loud voice; dark vs light room; subtle vs strong smell; etc. The process by which our sensory receptors and nervous system receive and represent stimulus energies from the environment. Analysis that begins with the sensory receptors and works up to the brain"s integration of sensory information. Information processing guided by higher-level mental processes, as when we construct perceptions drawing on our experience and expectations. Think about something (originates in the head), then reaction.
