PHIL 2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Modus Vivendi, Absolute Monarchy, Giovanni Boccaccio

22 views2 pages

Document Summary

The middle ages considered that god was above all things for being the creator of the universe. Thus, he was above man and that, in turn, the latter was above the societies that were his creation. This pyramidal vision of society allowed the hegemony of the feudal system for eight centuries. This political system was at the center of the entire political-social-religious organization of this era. Civil and religious society preserved and consolidated this modus vivendi, each protecting their own interests for the preservation of said regime. A very clear example is the organization of the catholic church and the absolute monarchies that structured their functions under a rigid hierarchical system leaving at the head the two unique figures of power: the pope and the king. The renaissance did not reside only in a mere rebirth of greco-roman literature or philosophy or in a prosaic imitation of the artistic forms of antiquity.
