PHIL 2 Chapter 1: Anaximander Miletus Biography
Document Summary
Anaximander of miletus was born approximately in 610 b. c. and died in 545 b. c. Theophrastus describes anaximander as a disciple and companion of thales, being about fourteen years younger than him. Like thales, he dealt with practical questions related to science and is credited with the development of a map of the black sea, probably for the use of the thousands of navigators traveling through it. Like other greek philosophers, he actively participated in the political life of his city, and he is credited with the direction of a colonizing expedition to apollonia. Regarding his philosophical activity he is credited with the composition of a prose work, "on nature", in which he exposes his theories. If that first element was the material cause of everything that existed, it must be the cause, therefore, of any particular matter, so that principle could not be identified with any particular matter.
