Document Summary

Chapter ten: behavior in social and cultural context. Learning objectives: explain how norms, roles, and culture influence behavior and cognition. Social norms are rules about hoe we are supposed to act , enforced by threats (if broken) or rewards (if followed). They are conventions of everyday life, and can be written or unspoken. When people find that everyone else is following or violating them, they are likely to do the same. The obedience study by stanley milgram aimed to test how man people would obey authority when directly ordered to violate ethical standards. Volunteers or teachers administered electrical shocks when actors ( learners ) answered wrong. Teachers: were ore likely to disobey authority when the authority wasn"t present, appeared ordinary, or when two authorities gave contradicting orders. Milgram concluded that obedience is more a function of situation rather than personality.
