Specific purpose : a single infinitive phrase that states precisely what a speaker hopes to accomplish in his or her speech. Must be clear and relate directly to the audience. Write statement as a phrase, not a fragment. Express purpose as a statement, not a question. Make sure specific purpose is not vague / general. Central idea : a one-sentence statement that sums up / encapsulates the major ideas of a speech. Aka thesis statement, subject sentence, major thought. More precise than topic and specific purpose statement. Reveals more about content of the speech.
