Document Summary
Language does not mirror reality, does not simply describe the world as it is. Language helps create our sense of reality by giving meaning to events. You must choose the rights words (tools from your toolbox) to get the job done right. Denotative meaning = literal or dictionary meaning of a word or phrase. Connotative meaning = meaning suggested by the associations or emotions triggered by a word or phrase: gives words intensity and emotional power. Be careful to use the correct word, if not, it can ruin a speech entirely. Thesaurus = a book of synonyms: helps make sure you have the exact right word. Use familiar words listeners want plain talk. Choose concrete words: concrete words = words that refer to tangible objects, people, places, things, not concepts, more likel(cid:455) to (cid:272)at(cid:272)h audie(cid:374)(cid:272)e"s atte(cid:374)tio(cid:374) tha(cid:374) a(cid:271)stra(cid:272)t (cid:449)ords, abstract words = words that refer to ideas or concepts.
