What is civic engagement: following local laws, voting, participating in local government, canvasing, being involved in the community, jury duty, discussing local problems. The rhetorical tradition: (cid:498)actively participating in community or public affairs(cid:499, rhetoric is the study of persuasion, aristotle vs. plato, could be used for good / obscured the truth. Deliberating in good faith: not attacking the other person and listening to their opinions. Being willing to concede on points if you realize you are wrong. Does not always have to include disagreement. The speaker listener partnership or understanding between two or more individuals(cid:499) Transactional communication: the process of constructing (cid:498)shared messages. Barriers to active listening: automatic rejection, attention span, stereotyping, distractions. Understanding diverse audiences: age and values, gender roles and stereotypes, race and ethnicity, gender identity, basically being pc, don"t be racist, cultural differences, religion, geographical environments, education, occupation and profession, economic status.
