PSYC-101 Chapter 9: LifeSpan Development
Document Summary
Lifespan development - how humans change and grow across time in three domains. Physical development - changes in body, brain, senses, motor skills, health, and wellness. Cognitive development - learning, attention, memory, language, thinking, reasoning, and creativity. Developmental milestones - the average age children hit certain milestones, plus or minus a bit of time (crawling, walking, writing, speaking, etc) Biological milestones tend to be universal, but social milestones are highly dependent on culture. Dev stage theory proposes sequence of development is universal. Babies universally go through the same stages of learning language. In contrast, motor development varies greatly on culture; what"s encouraged, what"s discouraged, etc. Regardless of timing, the stages seem to happen sequentially across societies. How do nature and nurture influence development? idk. Children go through 5 discrete stages of development (oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital) Not receiving proper love and parenting results in getting stuck in a certain stage; personality only develops during childhood.
