" Focus is on a single individual or a small group over a prolonged period of time, i. e. a lifetime. Can be difficult to generalize data to a larger population. People tend to change their behavior when being observed. Finding ways to observe behavior without a party realizing it can give meaningful insight. Person doing the recording/observing/etc must blend in for this to work; if anyone suspects something is off, the whole thing falls apart. Many famous examples with animals; i. e. jane goodall.
