Lands and languages of east asia pages 14 27. The term china can take on different meanings depending on its interpretation (ex. historically, culturally, geographical). It contains some of the world"s most densely populated regions and some of its least habitable deserts and mountains. China"s supply of rare earth metals exceeds the rest of the world combined and constitutes a major export. The chinese culture area can be farmed; chinese people looked down upon people who did not farm (ex. nomads). The yalu river marks the border between korea and china. Joseon followed goryeo, with the former lasting from 1392 up to 1910. During the 16th century, for maritime defense, korea innovated in shipbuilding, creating iron plated warships. Japan encompasses the islands of hokkaido, honshu, shikoku, kyushu, and the ryukyu. Linguistic similarities exist between japanese, korean, manchu, and mongolian grammar. Kansai plain, where kyoto and osaka are located, was the cradle of japanese civilization.
