Art between the wars pages 983 to 1033. New york dada: marcel duchamp: duchamp"s fountain (porcelain) of dada is a ready-made. The work was sponsored and photographed by alfred stieglitz. The work is a urinal turned on its side. The work questioned the traditional values of aesthetics and craftsmanship, arguing that they were not essential. The work was signed and submitted under the name r. mutt. Representational surrealism: magritte and dali: magritte"s the false mirror of surrealism emphasizes the unconscious mind. The iris is transformed into an eclipsed sun: dali"s persistence of memory was influenced by cheese and the artist"s watch. The painting suggests that the passage of time leads to death. De stijl and universal order: mondrian"s composition with red, blue, and yellow of de stijl ( the style ) focuses on the pure plastic, or pure form. Following world war 1, the painting is utopian for it tries to depict the ideal in contrast to the war"s devastation.
