Scene One
Polonius sends a servant to France with letters for his son,
asking him to spy on Laertes.
Ophelia tells her father that Hamlet walked up to her and
grabbed her and looked at her but didn’t actually say

Scene Two
The new king and queen welcome Hamlet’s friends from
university, Guildenstern and Rosencrantz.
The Queen had sent for Hamlet’s friends because she was
concerned about how depressed Hamlet was because he
can’t move on from his father’s death.
The ambassadors who went to Norway return, claiming that
they have avoided a war with Fortinbra’s troops.
Polonius tells the king that Hamlet is in love with Ophelia,
showing the king all the love letters that Ophelia received
from Hamlet.
Hamlet discusses his sadness with his friends, knowing that
the queen had invited them to the castle.
Hamlet announces that the kingdom will watch The
Murder of Gonzago, with changes made by Hamlet to set
up a trap to determine if Claudius is actually guilty.
