Macbeth Act 2 Scene 3-4
Scene Three
This scene introduces Macduff and Lenox.
Macduff asks Macbeth if King Duncan is awake, and Macbeth courtly replies that
the king is still asleep.
Macduff enters the king’s room but soon runs out, crying that Duncan has been
murdered and Macbeth fakes surprise, pretending as though he is horrified that
this terrible event took place under his roof.
Lady Macbeth pretends as though she cannot handle the news of the king’s death.
Duncan’s sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, are informed of his death - they are told
that the murder was most probably committed by the guards who had the bloody
dagger with them.
Macbeth then announces that in a fit of rage and grief, he has killed the guilty
guards.
However, Macduff is suspicious about the death of these guards and how quickly
Macbeth killed them - Lady Macbeth attempts to draw attention away from her
husband by fainting.
The princes decide to escape from Scotland before someone tries to kill them too.
o Malcolm escapes to England and Donalbain escapes to Ireland.
