Twelfth Night Act 5 Summary
Scene 1
• Duke Orsino goes to Olivia’s house with Viola who is disguised as Cesario.
• They run into Antonio who lashes out at Cesario (who he thinks is Sebastian) for
stealing his purse and betraying his trust.
• Olivia shows up, wanting to speak to Cesario (who she thinks is Sebastian, the guy
she has just married).
• Orsino threatens to kill Cesario for betraying him.
• Viola confesses her love for the Duke, which shocks Olivia who is married to
Sebastian.
• Orsino demands Cesario and Olivia to leave and never come before him ever
again.
• Sir Andrew enters, and he is injured from his fight with Sebastian, but Cesario
denies having ever fought the man.
• Then, to make this situation even more confusing, Sebastian returns after his fight
with Sir Andrew.
• All the characters are shocked by the appearance of doubles. Sebastian and Viola
see each other and begin to interrogate the other with questions about their family
and ancestry.
