CAS PS 222 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Lunar Eclipse, Wilhelm Wundt, Receptive Field
Document Summary
Empiricism is a theory of knowledge that emphasizes the role of experience, especially sensory perception. Inverse projection problem if you have an image on a retina, it is hard to understand what object was the cause: the stimulus on the receptors is ambiguous. Inverse projection problem: an image on the retina can be caused by an infinite number of objects. Visual system deals with ambiguities in shape and realizes that they can be the same object. Viewpoint invariance: can recognize objects in different perspectives. Surface features: is the grey part a grey surface of a two part object or a shadow of the white part. However, they are at different distances and are very different in size. Our visual systems are programmed to do this without consciously trying anything. Wilhelm wundt: father of psychology, von h"s assistant, structuralism: combining elements (tiny individual perceptions) and seeing it as one perception (figure or picture)
