Chaos- a struggle of all against all. Anarchy- no overall ruler but some order. Order- single leader or leadership group: today there is no one world ruler- every region has own government/leader. Peace of westphalia 1648- during the 30 years" war between catholics and protestants- treaty to restore order in europe while retaining sovereignty. Actors: states- all powerful b/c provides public goods and issues currency, controls army/police force. Characteristics: habitable territory, permanent population, governance of all, ability to deal with other states, recognition: nations- common ethnicity, language, culture, religion, experience of becoming a people. Kurdistan- one nation, five states: largest non-state nation 22 million people pkk rebellion in turkey. There is a distinction between the north and southern regions. Northern part is dutch and southern part is french: other actors: international governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, movements (which come at particular times) Conflict -competition for survival, resources (there is limited amount of goods in the world), power and influence, self-actualization.
