Chapter 1 (sections 1. 3 and 1. 4) > a modern view of the universe. *geocentric- the early belief that earth was at the center of the universe. Galaxies have billions of stars within them and some of the father galaxies" light has taken billions of years to reach us. *solar system- includes the sun, planets and their moons and other smaller objects like rocky asteroids and icy comets. *milky way galaxy- disk shaped collection of stars in space (a galaxy is a great island of stars). This is a part of the local group whereas groups of galaxies with more than a dozen members are called galaxy clusters. Superclusters- clusters of galaxy clusters universe- the sum total of all matter and energy, encompassing the superclusters and voids and everything within them. Au (astronomical unit)- earth"s distance from the sun light year (ly)- the distance that light can travel in one year.
