Immunity- a resitence to or protection against a disease causing pathogen. People who get viral infection and recover are immune to that disease aka measles. Tears and saliva - wash away microbes. Cilliated cells - beat to reove microbes from lungs. Blood contains 2 rtpes of cells: erythrocytes - red blood cells: no nucleus and carry o2 to the body, leukocytes - white blood bells: mediate the innate and adaptive immune responces. Inflammatory responce - overall innate immune responce at site of injury: platelets form a clot fig 48. 3. From broken capillaries release blood clotting proteins: macrophages become activated. Secrete chemolines: small signaling proteuns that call wbc to the area: mast cells secrete histamine. Chemical messanger: dilates blood vessel so that the become more permeable to allow for antibodies etc to get into tissue: neutrophils move out of blood vessels fig 48. 3 again. Engulf pathogens by phagocytosis - then kill pathogens: more macrophages arrive.
