Prejudice: an attitudinal + a ective response toward a group + its members. Negative attitudes get the most attention, but positive prejudice exists. Involves prejudging others because they belong to a speci c category. Discrimination: favorable or unfavorable behavior directed towards group members. Stereotypes, prejudice, + discrimination don"t have to occur together. Involves unfair treatment of others based on group membership alone. It"s common to be prejudiced but not engage in discrimination in order to avoid social or legal repercussions. A person can discriminate without prejudice (e. g. jewish parents not wanting their children to marry outside the faith only because they"re concerned about assimilation w non-jews)
