Chapter 4 (social cognition: thinking about people and situations) Social cognition: the study of how people think about the social world + arrive at judgements for interpreting the past, understanding the present, + predicting the future. Construal principle: if we want to know how a person will react in a given situation, we must understand how the person interprets that situation. A lack of su cient information on which to base a sound judgement rarely stops people from making judgements about a person or situation. Snap judgement: forming impressions of complete strangers based on glances. Willis + todorov: participants asked to rate photos with either limited or unlimited time. Hurried trait judgements corresponded very well with re ective judgements. Judgements correlated with each-other over 2 dimensions: positive-negative (e. g. trustworthy/untrustworthy, aggressive/not, power (e. g. con dent/bashful, dominant/submissive) Baby-like faces are considered weak, naive, + submissive. Have a harder time being deemed appropriate for adult jobs.
