The social me : refers to what we know about ourselves from social relationships. Who a person is in one social context may di er from who they are in another. James: our sense of who we are is forged in large part by our interactions. Our self-understanding is largely a product of construal processes our making sense of our experiences, proclivities, preferences, attributes, and so on. We may ask the person we want to know about because they would provide self-relevant information, even though they may lack self-insight. Nisbett + wilson: people can provide inaccurate explanations for their behaviors (e. g. why we chose job candidate a over candidate b) Self-protection: there are some things we"d rather not know about ourselves. Inaccessibility: we don"t have access to certain mental processes, such as those that lead us to prefer objects we looked at last. These processes are non-conscious, occurring outside of our awareness.
