Document Summary

The scientific method : operationalization, validity, reliability, falsifiability and hypothesis. Positivism : reality exists, and there is a real truth that we can someday. Post-positivism : reality exists, but we cannot access this real truth. Social constructivism : real truth is constructed by society to fit its own needs; models simply reinforce our pre-existing beliefs. Anti-positivism : there is no real truth. attempts to achieve truth turn people into machines (which is bad). Operationalization : how researchers define and measure the variables they will study. Convergent validity : is the variable related to variables to which it should. Reliability : the precision in our knowledge (i. e. , is our knowledge repeatable ) Theory : size of skull areas corresponds with underlying brain ability. Interjudge agreement example : different observers yield differ measurements; ideas about the number and order of regions. Validity : no evidence size of skulls is related to intelligence. Scientific racism : scientists use scientific tools to justify oppression.
