I am in birmingham because injustice is here and states. 4 steps in nonviolence campaign (1) collection of facts to determine whether injustices exist (2) negotiation (3) self purification (4) direct action. In birmingham, black leaders try to negotiate but the city fathers refuse to engage in these negotiations. Purpose of direct action is to call for negotiation. Nonviolent direct action seeks to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community which has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront the issue . Nonviolent, constructive tension is necessary for growth. Acknowledges that b is untimely, but that there has not been a single gain made without determined legal and nonviolent pressure. Personal witnessings: you cannot understand without having witnessed and experienced the injustices against blacks. Just: squares with the moral law or law of god. Unjust: out harmony with the moral law.
