- Socialization perspective is unique since it understands where citizens’ political
views and actions come from and how they change over a lifespan of a human
- Also focuses on macro level implications of micro level socialization dynamics
- Ex. class inequalities, gender gaps in political involvement, etc.
perpetuated by socialization processes
- Aggregate shifts can be seen through breaking behavior or opinion down
into period, life cycle, generation effects
PRE ADULT POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION
- Preadult years important for development political orientations (PID, ideological
leaning, attitudes on social issues like abortion), racial and ethic identity and
prejudice
- These years especially more important to political attitude development if
parents are highly engaged politically and provide frequent and consistent
political cues >more likely to mirror and retain (through social learning and
status inheritance)
- Community also shapes children’s attitudes
- Current view: youth are active learners who bring into the home political
experiences from outside (as opposed to passive)
- This reciprocal political socialization is seen most strongly in studies of
immigrants
- Parents less familiar with politics; children help parents adapt to
U.S. society and parents still contribute to their ps
DEVELOPMENTS OVER THE ADULT LIFE CYCLE
- IY key to development of political self
- Thought shaped strongly by the political character of the time when they came
of age
- This accounts for generation change (ex. 19th amendment women, AA
during Warren Court)
- High stimulus elections leaves a footprint in subsequent high turnout
- This period is politically formative beacuse
- (1) pre adult years not formative, weakly held views
- (2) early adulthood is when people develop new adult identities and
objectives both personal and political as they gain independence and
move into adult roles
