POL SCI 137A Chapter 1: PS133 Reading 1:19 (1)
Document Summary
Purpose: investigate effectiveness of warnings to increase respondent motivation and decrease survey satisficing (respondents do just enough to satisfy the survey request, but no more) by using 4 different warnings. Warnings reduce satisficing by increasing respondent motivation. But warnings may have unintended consequences (1) heighten respondents" sense of surveillance, increasing concern with self presentation (2) increase person"s cognitive engagement with the questionnaire. 3 of 4 improve respondent engagement, but some evidence indicates warnings increase socially desirable responding (sdr) for the more highly educated (greater overall tendency to offer socially desirable responses. 1, 2 and 3 t resulted in sig increase in passage rates in 1st and 2nd imc. Audit: increased imc and time spent and decreased item nonresponse. Anonymity: slightly smaller effects - no effect on time spent. Commitment: improved performance on imc but no effect on time spent or nonresponse. Feedback: no effects: sdr (indicated by whether respondent provided the sd response on the seven items)
