Having to know who the main character is and their background. Chief characteristic of protagonist is a desire, usually intense, to achieve a certain goal, and it is the interest of the audience in watching the protagonist move forward that objective that constitutes its absorption in the story. Sheriff will kane wants to protect a town and provide a decent living for his family. Protagonist does not always need to begin with a passionate desire to achieve a goal (can develop) Not all are sympathetic or likeable or admirable. On the other hand a sympathetic protagonist can have an undesirable side. Our interest in whether the protagonist achieves the goal is usually proportionate to the character"s interest in the same subject. Struggle of a character less than perfect but somewhat despicable that makes audiences care more about unfolding events. Stories like bonnie and clyde, butch and the sundance kid have protagonists where their decisions create the story.
