Tokugawa house : 1/4 fudai (tokugawa"s vassals and relatives): 1/3 tozama (outside lords, formal enemies): 1/3. Daimyo holds land not just for hereditary rights but for good government, or will be retrieved by bakufu. - competitors from non-religious dutch, british, and chinese. 1633 iemitsu: no more permits for japanese shuin-sen. 1639 end relationship with macao: alleged portuguese involvement in peasant revolt. Only chinese and dutch -- knowledge of the outside world -- remained for trade. Nominally the emperor"s court outranked the shogun"s bakufu. In fact courtiers became by feudal standards poor. Samurai (5-6%): fudai and shinpan generous, tozama poor.
