Environmental impacts of infrastructure decommissioning: restoration = assist recovery of damaged ecosystems, modify infrastructure , allow repair of ecosystem functions & biotic communities, but most restoration projects are minor. Infrastructure decay + demand for envi restoration infrastructure decommissioning = key envi policy. Common types of infrastructure: roads & rail roads, dams and levees, offshore oil & gas platforms, dod & energy facilities, watersheds and drinking water management. Infrastructure decommissioning = tremendous opportunity for ecological restoration: must plan for, anticipate, and fund infrastructure decommissioning. Infrastructure construction = primary drivers of envi change. Infrastructure can often be removed w/out economic or safety concerns. C: proactive policy & econ planning = key.
