Document Summary
Graphic design - letters are their material as metal is material to an architect. Humanism and the body & enlightenment and abstraction. 15th century italy - rejected gothic style. Italic letters = more casual style of handwriting. 16th century - printers combined roman and italic forms (incorporates curves, angles, and narrow proportions) Bodini and didot used calligraphic practices but they also created forms that collide with typographic tradition. Lead too soft to hold its shape at larger size under pressure on printing press - but wood works. Started to change into more universal shapes (triangles, squares, circles) Open spacing = space to create distinctive typographic texture. Tight spacing = creates intriguing and uncomfortable collisions. Can be simple or complex, or generic. Until the 20th century: grids served as frames for fields of text. 19th century - multi columned multimedia newspapers - insular edge. Constructivism - brings a more rational approach to attack typographic traditions.
