BIOLOGY 1B Chapter Notes - Chapter 52: California Current, Gulf Stream, Ecosystem Ecology
Document Summary
Chapter 52: an introduction to ecology and the biosphere. Section 52. 1: earth"s climate varies by latitude and season and is changing rapidly. Ecology: the scientific study of the interactions between organisms and the environment. Global ecology: how the regional exchange of energy and materials influences the functioning and distribution of organisms across the biosphere. Landscape ecology: factors controlling exchanges of energy, materials, and organisms across multiple ecosystems. Ecosystem ecology: study of energy flow and chemical cycling between organism and envrionment. Ecosystem: community of organisms in an area and the physical factors that the organisms interact with. Community ecology: examines how species interact, such as predation and competition. Community: a group of populations of different species in an area. Population: analyzes factors affecting population size and how/why it changes through time. Population: a group of individuals of the same species. Organismal ecology: the sub disciplines of physiology, evolutionary, and behavioral ecology. Inside organisms may have bacteria which is also a community.
