BIOL-242 Chapter Notes - Chapter 22: Pulmonary Vein, Pulmonary Artery, Trachea

76 views5 pages

Document Summary

The pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the alveoli within the lungs. The pulmonary veins then carry the newly oxygenated blood back to the left atrium. The right lung has 3 lobes and therefore requires 3 secondary (lobar) bronchi. Air passes through the lower respiratory system by starting in the: trachea, main bronchus, lobar bronchus, segmental bronchus, terminal bronchiole, respiratory bronchiole, alveoli. The esophagus is posterior to the trachea and heart, but is located medial to the right and left lungs. In other words, the esophagus is right in between the right and left lungs, but behind the heart and trachea. In your own words, describe why the left lung only has two lobes while the right lung has three. The left lung only has two lobes because the size allows room for the heart on the left side of the thorax.
