PSYC2274 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Attentional Blink, Feature Integration Theory, Binding Problem
Document Summary
We pay attention to some stimuli and not to others. Attention is not a single thing and does not have a single location in the nervous system. It is a name we give to a family of mechanisms that restrict or bias processing in various ways. External attention: attention to stimuli in the world. Internal attention: our ability to attend to one line of thought over another. Overt attention: refers to directing a sense organ at a stimulus (i. e. fixing your eyes on a single word). Covert attention: fixing your eyes somewhere but paying attention to something else entirely. Can be divided reading this text while being aware of the music playing in the background of the room. Can be sustained such as watching a pot to note the exact moment the water starts to boil. Selective attention ability to pick one (or a few) out of many stimuli.
